Horns that Pop #2: a review of songs in pop music that feature the saxophone.

No. 2 Dave Matthews – Stay (Wasting Time)

Leroi Moore on Saxophones. Lots of ‘em

When blues and country gave birth to their love child Rock and Roll, the sound of the saxophone was one of its first squeals. One of the only ones that could compete in volume with the drums. With improvements in amp technology, the guitar come up front and the saxophone drifted back (a little). When the Dave Matthews Band broke into the mainstream from the jam band scene, he  brought a fresh approach to the sounds of “pop” music. Leroi Moore is a monster of a player. On this track alone he uses numerous horns as a section, shows off speedy technique and articulation, soulful line playing, rocks a killer solo and uses some really neat production effects. One of the great bands to come out the 90’s IMHO. I wish I had the chance see/hear Leroi play live.
